Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:
Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner announced on Thursday that he has recommended Gary Krienitz, a 19-year veteran of the Aurora Fire Department, as the next fire chief. The 43-year-old Krienitz is set to take over on February 20, just one day after current Chief John Lehman retires.
Weisner emphasized that Krienitz was selected from a pool of six highly qualified internal candidates, highlighting the strong leadership culture that Lehman has cultivated during his tenure. The mayor made the announcement in the main bay of the Central Fire Station downtown, where numerous fire department personnel, members of the Aurora Police Department, aldermen, and members of the public were in attendance.
The appointment still needs to be approved by the Aurora City Council. A special meeting of the committee of the whole will be held at 5 p.m. on January 26 to discuss the recommendation.
Krienitz shared a personal story about how his career path began. “When I was in high school at Waubonsie Valley, a friend gave me an opportunity to ride with Medic 4 at Fire Station 4. Little did I know that brief ride-along would have such an impact on who I would become,†he said. “Now to be considered for the position as the next chief of the Aurora Fire Department is such a great honor.â€
In 2014, Krienitz was honored as Firefighter of the Year in Aurora. Alongside Private Jason Larson and Private Dan Murphy, he received the department’s highest award for his role in a dangerous motel fire that saved two lives. His dedication and bravery have consistently set a high standard within the department.
A member of the National Fire Protection Association and the International Association of Arson Investigators, Krienitz holds more than 15 certifications, including evidence technician, rescue specialist, arson investigator, emergency medical technician, juvenile fire setter counselor, and personal trainer. He has completed over 50 training courses through various agencies, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Illinois Fire Service Institute, the Illinois State Police Academy for Arson, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Krienitz earned his fire science degree from the College of DuPage and served as a team leader with the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force.
Krienitz expressed deep gratitude to Chief Lehman for his mentorship throughout his career. “He's been a guiding force for me from the beginning,†he said. He also thanked all the firefighters in Aurora, calling them “smart and excellent†and acknowledging their unwavering support.

The brazed Plate Heat Exchanger (BPHE) is a type of heat exchanger construction in which metal plates with flat surface offer an effective and efficient method of heat transfer. These plates are joined together by brazing (mainly copper), typically stainless steel. Due to the close contact between the two surfaces, there is a very high heat transfer coefficient, leading to a low overall unit size. They therefore provide much greater efficiency than a Shell And Tube Heat Exchanger.
Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers are widely used in air-conditioning and refrigeration, power generation, and other process applications. For example, within a cooling cycle, a BPHE can be used to transfer heat from one fluid to another. Typical fluids in such coils and systems are either glycol or water. In a power system, a BPHE can be used to cool oils, recirculating lubricants, fuels, and other fluids.
The major advantages of BPHE are their compact size, efficient heat transfer and minimal pressure loss. BPHEs also have low maintenance requirements and a long service lifetime. Furthermore, because of their flat surface design, BPHEs have no patterns or turns and thus lower energy costs and minimize fouling. Finally, the material used in BPHEs makes them resist to corrosion and heat, making them ideal for high temperature and hostile environments.
