CFD Still & Box – 3/1/2014

This is a report from Dennis McGuire, Jr.

Engine Company 115 arrived at 12021 S. Eggleston and found a basement fire in a two-story brick apartment building. Battalion 22 activated the Still & Box alarm because the fire had quickly spread to the second floor. It appeared that the hydrants in the area might have been frozen, as there was a delay in establishing a positive water source. Truck Company 27 set up in the 1/4 sector with their main line on the roof. The fire was controlled by several engine companies using approximately four to five handlines.
Interestingly, while the crews were inside the building, a neighbor decided he couldn’t wait any longer and tried to leave. He drove his car over a couple of hose lines but was quickly stopped by six or seven firefighters and a police officer. He didn’t move much after that.
