Commissioner Nance-Holt joined Chicago’s mayor and a host of partners & stakeholders for the grand opening of the Bauer Plummer Public Safety Training Center. This unique facility is a great resource for emergency personnel and will be an anchor for the West Side community.

On Wednesday, Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot was joined by Chicago Police Department Superintendent David O. Brown, Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt, Alderman Emma Mitts (37th Ward), Dr. Elizabeth Lockhart, and various community leaders to officially open the new Public Safety Training Center (PSTC). This state-of-the-art facility is designed to equip first responders with the tools and training they need to handle real-world emergencies effectively.

The PSTC includes a six-story tower where each floor is designed to mimic different environments firefighters might encounter—like apartments, hotels, and office buildings. There's also an indoor and outdoor scenario village that replicates a typical four-way intersection, allowing departments to practice responding to a wide range of emergency calls in a realistic setting.

Located on a 30.4-acre former rail yard that had been vacant for over 40 years, the site was purchased by the city in 2017. The area will soon welcome two minority-owned restaurants—Peach’s and Culvers—as well as a 27,000-square-foot Boys and Girls Club, all set to open this summer. These additions aim to support the local economy and provide valuable community resources.

The PSTC is positioned between two Invest South/West initiatives—one in Austin and another in West Humboldt Park—both expected to bring $95M in private investment over the next few years. This development is expected to create a vibrant corridor connecting these neighborhoods, fostering economic growth, job creation, and improved housing opportunities.

Together, the PSTC, the Boys and Girls Club, and the new restaurants represent a significant $170M investment in the community, combining public and private funding to drive long-term change and stability in the West Side of Chicago.
