**SITE BITE: Converting the Microchannel in a Trane® TCD600B Unit** At Nationwide Coils, we're always excited to take on new challenges—especially when it comes to microchannel conversions. Recently, we had the opportunity to work on another successful project for a major telecommunications company in South Texas. This time, the job involved converting a Trane TCD600B unit. The original unit was equipped with eight all-aluminum microchannel coils. While these were functional, they were not as durable or efficient as copper tube, aluminum fin coils. That’s where our expertise came into play. Instead of replacing all eight coils, we designed and built two larger, more efficient coils. This made installation easier and improved performance. We also upgraded the microchannel from all-aluminum to copper tubes, which are more resistant to corrosion and provide better heat transfer. The installation went smoothly, and the customer was able to place the new coils back into the unit with only minor adjustments. Each coil is over 5 feet tall, 6 feet wide, and weighs around 175 pounds—so it's no small task! After seeing the results, the customer reached out again to convert their other Trane RTUs on a quarterly basis. They’ve even requested a small modification: increasing the length of the end plate flange by ½ inch. This will make the flange 1.5 inches long, allowing the unit casing to rest securely on the flange and be fastened with self-tapping screws. The customer sent us some great photos of the installed coils, along with detailed notes on the modifications they want for the other units.
