Gurnee is on the site

Gurnee Fire Department patch

The Gurnee Fire Department has recently been added to the site, marking another milestone in the ongoing effort to document fire departments across Lake County and MABAS Division 4. Covering 33 square miles, Gurnee’s two stations serve a diverse area that includes major landmarks such as Six Flags Great America and Gurnee Mills, one of the largest outlet malls in the country. Their fire suppression fleet is entirely composed of E-ONE apparatus, with all four ambulances being Type I models from Road Rescue, built on IHC 4700 or 4300 chassis. A new Type I ambulance from Wheeled Coach is currently on order, further modernizing their emergency response capabilities. In addition to their regular fleet, Gurnee also plays a key role in housing specialized MABAS assets. One notable piece of equipment is a 1991 Mack/Volvo roll-off chassis, used to transport essential supplies for MABAS Divisions 4 and 5. This chassis carries two containers: one for the Technical Rescue Team (TRT), stocked with tools and lumber, and another for the Wildland Task Force, which includes an ATV and other necessary gear for off-road operations.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Gurnee’s E-ONE fleet is the variety of chassis and cab styles they have incorporated over the years. From early fixed-cab models to more modern tilt-cab designs, the department has continuously updated its equipment to meet evolving needs.

Gurnee also operates two engines equipped with the Cyclone tilt-cab design, featuring an older grille style. The tower ladder, built on a Hurricane chassis, has a fixed cab and is one of the department's standout pieces of equipment.

In 1998 when Gurnee received their new E-ONE tower ladder, they arranged to have the unit photographed with one of the main town attractions. At that time, Gurnee Mills was billed as the largest outlet mall in the country. Planet Hollywood was one of the anchor restaurants at the mall. Larry Shapiro collection

Gurnee Squad 1352 was ordered with a four-door Sentry cab and a vista roof. The Sentry is distinguishable by the straight, non-contoured door line of the driver's door. The vista roof was a raised roof that E-ONE offered without full height rear doors. This photo was taken inside Six Flags Great America when the squad was delivered. Overall, Gurnee Fire Department exemplifies a well-equipped and adaptable department, capable of handling both routine calls and large-scale emergencies. Their commitment to maintaining modern, versatile equipment ensures they remain a vital part of the Lake County emergency response network.
