Gurnee is on the site

Gurnee Fire Department patch

The Gurnee Fire Department has recently been added to the Lake County MABAS Division 4 page, marking another important addition to the site. Located in northern Illinois, Gurnee serves a large area of 33 square miles, including major landmarks like Six Flags Great America and Gurnee Mills, one of the largest outlet malls in the country. The department operates from two fire stations and maintains a fleet of E-ONE apparatus, with all four of their ambulances being Type I models built on IHC 4700 or 4300 chassis. A new Type I ambulance is currently on order from Wheeled Coach.

In addition to its regular firefighting equipment, Gurnee also supports MABAS operations by housing some specialized assets. One notable piece is a 1991 Mack/Volvo roll-off chassis used to transport storage containers for MABAS Divisions 4 and 5. These containers hold essential tools and supplies—such as those used by the Technical Rescue Team (TRT) and the Wildland Task Force, which includes an ATV for off-road operations.

One of the most interesting aspects of Gurnee’s E-ONE fleet is the variety of chassis and cab styles they have used over the years. This diversity highlights the department’s adaptability and commitment to using the best available technology for emergency response.

Gurnee has two engines equipped with the Cyclone tilt-cab design, featuring an older grille style. Their tower ladder, however, is built on a Hurricane chassis with a fixed cab. This mix of designs showcases the evolution of fire apparatus over time.

In 1998 when Gurnee received their new E-ONE tower ladder, they arranged to have the unit photographed with one of the main town attractions. At that time, Gurnee Mills was billed as the largest outlet mall in the country. Planet Hollywood was one of the anchor restaurants at the mall. Larry Shapiro collection

Gurnee Squad 1352 was ordered with a four-door Sentry cab and a vista roof. The Sentry is distinguishable by the straight, non-contoured door line of the driver's door. The vista roof was a raised roof that E-ONE offered without full height rear doors. This photo was taken inside Six Flags Great America when the squad was delivered. These historical photos not only document the department’s equipment but also give a glimpse into the community it serves. From amusement parks to shopping centers, Gurnee Fire Department plays a vital role in keeping the area safe and prepared for any emergency.
