This message is from Jim Skrabel:
I recently started scanning some old 35mm photos of fires I've responded to over the years, and I came across these. They reminded me of a specific incident that really stood out in my memory.
This is the River North Art Gallery Fire that took place at 361 W. Superior Street on April 15, 1989. It was initially reported as a 5-11, and maybe one or two special calls. I heard that Aerial Tower 3 had been dispatched, so I grabbed my camera and headed downtown. At the time, I was living in Cicero, so it took me a bit to get there. By the time I arrived, the fire had already escalated to a 4-11.
It was a tough call, and I remember the intensity of the scene. These photos are a nice reminder of the work we did back then, and how much things have changed over the years.
