I recently started scanning some old 35mm photos of fires I've responded to over the years, and I stumbled upon these. They're from a fire I remember well—the River North Art Gallery Fire at 361 W. Superior Street on April 15, 1989.
That fire was initially reported as a 5-11, and possibly one or two specials. I heard that Aerial Tower 3 had been dispatched, so I grabbed my camera and headed downtown. At the time, I was living in Cicero, so it took me a little while to get there. By the time I arrived, the fire had already escalated to a 4-11. It was pretty intense, and I managed to capture a few shots before things started to settle down.
These photos give me a nice trip down memory lane. It's interesting to see how much has changed over the years, both in terms of firefighting techniques and the city itself.
