Mount Prospect Fire Department news

Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:

Mount Prospect Fire Chief Brian Lambel is pushing for the village’s board of fire and police commissioners to approve the termination of an employee he claims has made threatening remarks.

The official complaint submitted by the chief details that Firefighter/Paramedic Lloyd Miller, a 12-year veteran of the department, has been on paid administrative leave since January. According to the report, Miller allegedly told a colleague that he would “kill some people” if he wasn’t placed on the promotion list. The document also notes that his coworkers feel uneasy around him and have seen photos on his Facebook page showing him firing a gun at a picture of Osama bin Laden.

Lambel said the matter will be reviewed during a hearing scheduled for Thursday evening and declined to offer further comments beyond what’s included in the formal complaint.

Miller’s attorney, Dan Herbert, called the allegations unreasonable, suggesting they were retaliation for Miller’s critical remarks about the village during his campaign for a position on the firefighters’ union executive board.

Earlier this year, Miller had sought a seat on the union’s executive board during meetings in November and December. The complaint reveals that on January 13, Miller expressed dissatisfaction with being transferred to a different station and with changes made by the union president regarding the lieutenant’s testing process. He reportedly said he would kill someone if he wasn’t on the next promotion list.

Firefighter/Paramedic Joseph Reschke reported the comment, and on January 17, Chief Lambel placed Miller on paid administrative leave while a formal investigation was launched. A week later, on January 24, Lambel required Miller to undergo a fitness-for-duty evaluation.

During the evaluation, Miller, who owns a handgun and a shotgun, denied ever firing either weapon. He also claimed he wasn’t a gun enthusiast and didn’t know the brand, caliber, or type of ammunition he purchased.

However, several of Miller’s colleagues provided the fire chief with copies of six photos taken from Miller’s Facebook account. These images showed Miller holding a gun and shooting at a target featuring a photo of Osama bin Laden. One image depicted him standing alone with a large poster of bin Laden that had approximately 20 bullet holes.

The complaint states that Miller denied making the threats and, when shown the photos, claimed he couldn’t identify himself in them.

Thanks, Dan
