Box Alarm fire near Des Plaines, 12-2-22

On Friday morning, December 2nd, 2022, the North Maine Fire Protection District (FPD), along with firefighters from Des Plaines and Niles, responded to a house fire in a remote, unincorporated area of Des Plaines. The incident occurred at a large home located at 9609 Reding Circle, which sits on a small lake off Golf Road and near I-294. Reding Circle is a narrow, private road with limited access, making the location somewhat challenging for emergency responders. Upon arrival, smoke was already visible, prompting the alarm to be upgraded to a working fire. Shortly after, flames were seen breaking through the roof of the vacant structure. Fire companies initiated an interior attack but were quickly forced to transition to a defensive operation using aerial resources. Three ladder trucks were deployed, including Des Plaines Tower 61, Niles Tower 2, and Glenview Truck 14. North Maine Engine 1, Niles Engine 3, and Prospect Heights Squad 9 provided water supply, while Truck 2 operated from its own hydrant. The alarm was later upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm, though most of the mutual aid units that typically respond under such a designation did not get involved in the actual firefighting efforts. Photos by Tim Olk capture the scene, showing the intense effort by firefighters as they worked to contain the blaze. Despite the challenges posed by the location and the size of the fire, crews managed to prevent the flames from spreading further. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
