Problems and Opportunities

In 2011, the output of internal combustion engines in China exceeded 77 million units, and the total power exceeded the 140 million kilowatts mark, becoming a truly large-scale manufacturing enterprise of internal combustion engines. However, on the whole, there is still a big gap between China's internal combustion engine products and the international advanced level in terms of performance, quality, especially in energy conservation and environmental protection, and reliability.

In particular, the issuance of the Opinions on Strengthening the Energy-saving and Emission-reduction of the Internal Combustion Engine Industry of the General Office of the State Council (referred to as the “Opinion”) has begun to count down the assessment of energy-saving and emission reduction of the entire internal combustion engine industry.

According to the Opinions, by 2015, energy-saving internal combustion engine products will account for 60% of the entire society's internal combustion engine products. Compared with 2010, the fuel consumption rate of internal combustion engines will be reduced by 6% to 10% by 2015, achieving a reduction in commodity fuel consumption 2000. 10,000 tons, reduce CO2 emissions by 62 million tons, reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 10%, and use alternative fuels to save 15 million tons of commodity fuel. At the same time, a number of key remanufacturing enterprises, such as automobiles and construction machinery engines, will be cultivated to achieve localization and large-scale production of high-efficiency, energy-saving and environmentally-friendly internal combustion engine main engines and their parts and components manufacturing equipment.

Regarding whether this goal can be achieved, people in the industry generally believe that it still has difficult challenges.

In addition to factors such as the increase in raw materials, fuels, power, and labor costs faced by the industry, domestic internal combustion engine companies are also facing the predicament of foreign companies robbing the Chinese market. For this dilemma, Jiang Deming told reporters that the main reasons are domestic and foreign-funded enterprises. Compared to the lack of core competitiveness, domestic companies are reluctant to invest more money in R&D, and their independent intellectual property rights are not protected.

It is undeniable that compared with foreign-funded enterprises, domestic companies do have a big gap with foreign companies in terms of new product development speed, product performance, brand, quality, cost, and after-sales service.

"But these gaps can only be shortened by Chinese companies through hard work." Jiang Deming told reporters that Chinese engines are starting from the high-pressure fuel supply system of diesel engines and various parts and components of direct-injection gasoline engine oil supply systems, as well as exhaust after-treatment systems and turbochargers.
