The study found that perovskite nanocrystals produce white light: can be used as an efficient source of illumination and data transmission

Researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology have demonstrated that cesium-lead-bromide perovskite nanocrystals produce white light that can be used as an efficient source of illumination and for ultra-fast data transfer.

The recently proposed Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a technology that has the potential to achieve both energy efficient lighting and high-speed data communications using electromagnetic radiation of visible wavelengths (380-700 nm) rather than conventional radio frequency (RF) waves. VLC has several advantages over conventional RF-based communication systems in fact, including high security, fastness, and unadjusted bandwidth.

In a typical VLC system, the emitters use LEDs or laser diodes (LDs) with phosphors (blue, green and yellow / red color converters) to generate white light for solid state light (SSL) and data communications. However, this limits the modulation bandwidth of the VLC system to phosphorus. That is, the long excited state lifetime (the time required to re-emit absorbed photons) of conventional yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) based phosphors poses a serious bottleneck in VLC applications. Therefore, the bandwidth associated with phosphors limits the VLC system to about 10 MHz and offsets its key advantages over RF communication systems.

In recent years, perovskites have become "magic" materials for optoelectronic applications (photovoltaics and photodetectors). In addition, recent studies have revealed that perovskite nanocrystals (NCs), in the form of lead cesium bromide, have relatively high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and short photoluminescence (PL) lifetime. In fact, this combination of high PLQY and short PL lifetime is an ideal requirement for SSL and VLC color converters.
