2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 4-11-20

At 1200 hours today, I was just outside Engine 109’s station. The 14th Battalion conducted a size-up of a two-story ordinary furniture store that measured 25 by 80 feet. There was a fire on the first floor, and the entire store was packed with items stacked from floor to ceiling, front to back. Five minutes into the incident, the box was called in. When I arrived, there was some fire showing on the second floor, and crews were working to clear out the contents of the first floor. By 12:55 PM, the 2-11 was called for additional manpower to help with the removal. The alarm was eventually struck at 1:30 PM.

It was a tough call from the start. The building was completely filled with merchandise, making it hard to control the fire. Crews worked quickly to get people out and move things to prevent further spread. It looked like the fire had been burning for a while before we got there. The area is pretty busy, so getting traffic under control was also part of the challenge. As the incident progressed, more units arrived, and the scene became very active. It’s always intense when you have a full alarm with multiple companies involved. The photos show the chaos and the aftermath, and they really capture what it was like on the ground. Definitely one of those fires that reminds you how important quick response and good coordination are.
