PRESS RELEASE

To our neighbors and community members,

We are writing to inform you of a difficult decision that has been made due to ongoing financial challenges. Over the past few years, the Limestone Township Fire Protection District has faced serious difficulties in maintaining a sufficient number of qualified personnel, largely due to budget constraints. In an effort to stabilize our finances, we have taken several measures, such as selling off equipment like a brush/rescue truck, a utility vehicle, and a fire engine. We've also reduced tuition reimbursement for essential training, cut staffing from three to two members on duty, suspended all salary increases, and even attempted a referendum in March 2020, which did not pass.

Unfortunately, these efforts have not been enough to sustain the level of service we’ve always provided. As a result, the Limestone Township Fire Protection District must announce that the only fire station in our community—located at 4948 W. Rt. 17—will be closed and unstaffed every Saturday and Sunday starting November 7th, 2020, if the upcoming referendum on November 3rd fails.

This decision will allow us to maintain our current weekday staffing levels, but we may need to implement more days of closure in the future to cope with rising costs, including unfunded state mandates and the new minimum wage requirements set by the state.

We understand this change will significantly impact emergency response times on weekends. Our team will do everything possible to respond quickly, especially if volunteers are available. However, if we don’t have enough volunteers, residents may need to wait for assistance from neighboring departments, if available.
