Organized 5-12-70 @ 55 W Illinois St – "Big John"

6-7-3 (G-156) – 1952 IHC M65 5-ton 6x6 chassis, modified by the CFD Shops in 1970 to include a custom body and twin Stang HP deluge monitors capable of pumping 15,000-GPM. The truck was named after John F. Plant, the designer behind this iconic piece of fire apparatus.

1-25-82 (G-461) – 1981 Chevy C20 / CFD Shops fabricated and installed the body and twin Eastman deluge monitors capable of flowing 4,000-GPM.



This unique vehicle, known as "Big John," was a standout in the Chicago Fire Department's fleet during its time. Its powerful deluge monitors made it one of the most effective tools for large-scale fires. Though it has since been replaced by newer models, its legacy lives on through the stories and photos shared by those who worked with it. Whether you're a fire history enthusiast or just curious about vintage equipment, "Big John" is a fascinating part of Chicago’s firefighting heritage.
