Late on Saturday night into early Sunday morning, just after 3 AM (on December 23rd), Engine 101 responded to a significant fire at a one-story trucking company located at 74th and Bell Avenue. The structure, which measured 65 by 100 feet with a truss roof, was quickly overwhelmed by flames. Battalion 20 arrived on the scene within minutes and quickly upgraded the response to a 2-11 Alarm. Despite the efforts of multiple units, the building was ultimately declared a total loss.
Engine companies 101, 15, 123, and 54 were all actively involved in pumping water onto the blaze, while Tower Ladder 39, Tower Ladder 54, and Squad 5's Snorkel were deployed for aerial operations. The intensity of the fire was captured in several photos taken by Eric Haak, who provided stunning images of the inferno consuming the warehouse roof, the heroic efforts of Engine 101, and the impressive presence of the various apparatus on site. One particularly striking photo shows Tower Ladder 39 working diligently against the towering flames, its lights reflecting off the dark sky.
The firefighters faced an immense challenge that night, as the scale and ferocity of the fire required coordinated efforts from numerous units. Even with the combined resources of the Chicago Fire Department, the damage was extensive, leaving behind only the charred remains of what was once a functioning facility. As the sun rose, the aftermath revealed the extent of the destruction, serving as a poignant reminder of the dangers these brave men and women face daily in their service to the community.
In addition to the structural images, other photos highlight the teamwork and determination of the crews, including a shot of Engine 15 and another of Engine 54, both clearly engaged in the critical work of containing the blaze. A final image of Squad 5's Snorkel provides a different perspective, showcasing the technical precision required to manage such large-scale incidents. These visuals not only document the event but also pay tribute to the skill and courage displayed by the firefighters that night.
