2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 4-11-20

At 12:00 PM today, just outside of Engine 109’s station. The 14th Battalion conducted a size-up of a two-story ordinary furniture store measuring 25 by 80 feet, with fire reported on the first floor. The store was completely packed—everything from floor to ceiling and front to back. Five minutes in, a box was called for. When I arrived, there was visible fire on the second floor, and crews were working to clear out the first floor. By 12:55 PM, Engine 2-11 was requested for extra manpower to help with the removal. The alarm was eventually called off at 1:30 PM.

The scene was intense. With so much stored merchandise, the fire spread quickly through the building, making it difficult to contain. Firefighters worked hard to control the flames and ensure the safety of the surrounding area. It was clear that the store had been filled to capacity, which likely contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. As the crews worked, it was also evident how important it was to have additional support during such a large-scale incident. This was a reminder of the unpredictable nature of fires and the critical role that quick response plays in minimizing damage and protecting lives.
