PRESS RELEASE

Dear Residents,

As many of you may already know, the Limestone Township Fire Protection District has been facing significant challenges in maintaining a sufficient number of qualified personnel due to ongoing financial difficulties. Over the past few years, we've made several difficult decisions to try and stabilize our budget, such as selling off a brush/rescue truck, a utility vehicle, and a fire engine. We’ve also reduced tuition reimbursement for essential training, cut staffing from three to two members, suspended all salary increases, and even attempted a referendum in March that didn’t pass.

Despite these efforts, the financial strain has continued to grow, especially with new state mandates and the recent increase in minimum wage requirements. As a result, we are forced to make another tough decision: starting November 7th, 2020, our only fire station at 4948 W. Rt. 17 will be closed and unstaffed on weekends—provided the upcoming referendum on November 3rd fails.

This change will help us keep weekday operations running with our current staffing levels. However, we may need to extend the closures in the future if the financial pressure continues to mount.

We understand this will lead to longer response times during weekends. Our goal is to respond as quickly as possible, relying on volunteers who can reach the scene from home. If enough volunteers aren't available, we may have to request assistance from neighboring fire departments, which could further delay emergency responses.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Chief Whalen or Deputy Chief Bruno at (815) 932-4664.
