On May 25, 1979, American Airlines Flight 191 took off from O'Hare International Airport bound for Los Angeles. As the DC-10 accelerated down the runway, one of its underwing engines detached, leading to a catastrophic loss of control. The aircraft managed to stay airborne for just 31 seconds before crashing into a field near Touhy Avenue, where it exploded in a fireball. Tragically, all 271 passengers and crew aboard were killed, along with two people on the ground.
This year marked the 40th anniversary of what remains the deadliest aviation disaster in U.S. history. In honor of the victims, hundreds gathered at Lake Park in Des Plaines, the site of a permanent memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives that day. At 3:04 PM, a bell was rung 31 times—once for each second the doomed flight remained in the air. Attendees listened as the names of all the victims were read aloud, followed by a solemn tribute from two Chicago Fire Department ARFF units, which released four bursts of water over the memorial, symbolizing each decade since the tragedy.
The event was a powerful reminder of the past and a moment of reflection for families, survivors, and the community.
