Dan Jasina from Michigan recently came across an interesting article featuring the new fire boat, complete with photos and even a video. You can read the full article [here](#), with some highlights below:
The vessel, crafted by Hike Metal Products Ltd. and their team of over 20 skilled workers, marks more than a year of dedicated effort. It’s one of the largest boats shipped out of Wheatley in nearly half a decade, surpassing even the size of the 2007 fire boat built for Baltimore.
This past Friday morning, the Chicago fire boat embarked on its journey from the harbor, potentially cruising down the Detroit River later that afternoon. After navigating through Lake St. Clair, Lake Huron, and Lake Michigan, it’s expected to reach Chicago by Sunday evening, weather permitting.
Interestingly, the boat proudly bears the Wheatley name, a delightful coincidence that caught both the Chicago fire department and the local shipbuilders by surprise. The fire boat is named after Christopher Wheatley, a 31-year-old firefighter who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on August 9th. He fell to his death while carrying equipment up a fire escape during a restaurant fire.
Christopher’s father, Daniel Wheatley, was informed by the Chicago Fire Department that the new fire boat would be commissioned in honor of his son. Upon discovering this, he reached out to Hike Metal to inquire about the boat's construction details. A visit to Wheatley in March allowed him to witness the boat's progress and explore the village.
Hike Metal officials only learned about this remarkable connection four months ago when they sought guidance on the boat’s name. Company President Andy Stanton expressed his delight at having such a heroic name attached to the vessel. “It was quite unexpected,†he admitted.
The Christopher Wheatley is a robust fire boat designed to handle up to 12 inches of ice, ensuring year-round operations. Equipped with cutting-edge features, it can support scuba divers, assist in rescue missions, fight fires using foam or water, and serve as a supplementary water source for firefighting efforts. Its crew can vary between five and ten members depending on the task, including firefighting. Below deck, there’s a fully functional kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping quarters for the crew.
One of the four monitor nozzles is mounted on a platform capable of elevating 30 feet, delivering a powerful spray strong enough to remove bricks from a building’s facade, according to Stanton.
To ensure easy passage under low bridges, the boat was designed to lower its mast, keeping it no higher than 16 feet above the waterline. Powered by four engines—two for water pumps and two 1,500 horsepower propulsion engines—the boat can reach speeds of up to 12 knots and maintain a pace of three knots when breaking through ice.
Dan also shared some captivating photos, which you can view [here](#).
