Domestic Isoprene Rubber Technology Successfully Completes the Entire Process of Engineering Research

On June 1st, the Jilin Petrochemical Research Institute convened a technical summary meeting for the pilot driving of 1,000 tons of isoprene rubber. The product test results announced at the meeting indicated that the 1,000 tons of isoprene rubber was tested by recovering isoprene as a raw material. There are no significant changes in various indicators using fresh isoprene as raw material. This marks the entire process of successful completion of engineering research on domestic isoprene rubber technology.

The person in charge of the project told the reporter that the project team used the recovered isoprene as raw material and conducted a 120-hour full-flow experiment to examine the recycling effect and polymerization conditions. All the tested products passed the test. The next step of the work of the project team will turn to refinement and improvement of the entire technology and carry out long-period drive tests.

The isoprene rubber industrialization technology development and construction project is the scientific and technological support project undertaken by the Jilin Petrochemical Research Institute and is also a key project of China Petroleum. In the past three years, the Institute has undergone small-scale trials and pilot trials. Using a special preparation method, a homogeneous rare-earth catalyst with high activity has been prepared. By the polymerization of isoprene, a high cis content (>96%) is obtained. Isoprene rubber with relative molecular mass (ML=75~85) and narrow relative molecular mass distribution (<3.0). The stress-strain curve of this product has similar induced crystal characteristics to that of natural rubber. Its product structure parameters and vulcanizate properties were tested by the China Rubber Industry Association Material Inspection and Research Center and the National Electrochemical and Spectroscopic Research and Analysis Center to achieve equivalent foreign products. Technical indicators, product quality has reached the level of similar foreign products.

In July of last year, after the successful completion of the first Kiloton-scale isoprene rubber pilot plant in China, the institute immediately carried out a large number of engineering research work, which solved the high activity and stability of the rare earth catalytic system during the amplification process. The cis content and narrow relative molecular mass distribution, the use of solvents and monomers for high viscosity glue polymerization, agglomeration and post-treatment, and critical issues such as devolatilization, drying, and aging prevention of raw rubber, amplification in the polymerization reaction Breakthroughs were made in the effects, heat and mass transfer, etc. At the same time, experience was accumulated in various aspects such as anti-blocking and anti-polymerization, raw material processing and recycling.

The low conversion rate of scientific and technological innovation achievements in China and the lag in engineering research are the major obstacles to the “last mile”. Fortunately, in recent years, with the continuous deepening of China's reform and opening up, and the introduction of the scientific concept of development, engineering research has been receiving attention from the domestic, especially the business community.
