From the IllinoisFireSafetyAlliance.com:
Over the week of June 19-25, 2016, around 70 burn-injured children will participate in the 26th annual Camp "I Am Me," held in Ingleside, Illinois. Organized by the non-profit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA), the camp takes place at YMCA Camp Duncan and offers burn survivors aged 8 to 16 a mix of regular camp activities alongside specialized programs tailored to meet their unique needs. Despite costing $2,400 per child, the camp is entirely free thanks to the kindness of donors.
"These kids suffer burns from different causes like scalding hot water, chemicals, flames, or electrical accidents," says a spokesperson. "They're just a fraction of the hundreds of Illinois children burned annually, but we're always working with hospitals to raise awareness and help more kids. We want to provide this chance to every burn-injured child in Illinois."
Beyond enjoying traditional camp activities, young burn survivors engage in character-building exercises, journaling, and therapy sessions. This supportive atmosphere encourages learning from oneself and others, fostering healing and boosting self-esteem—resources many don't find back home.
"Many kids feel isolated during their burn recovery," explains Zaleski. "They might get teased about their scars—physical and emotional—in their hometowns. But camp reassures them they’re not alone and they don’t need to hide who they are. It leaves a meaningful, lasting impression on these kids."
Interestingly, over a third of the camp's volunteers are former attendees. Alongside firefighters, medical professionals, teachers, and private sector workers, there’s roughly one volunteer for every camper.
Guests are invited to join Appreciation Day on Wednesday, June 22. Starting at 11:00 a.m., a parade of fire trucks from across the state will arrive with sirens blaring, followed by lunch at noon and a ceremony at 1:00 p.m. to honor donors, supporters, and volunteers. Later, campers can look forward to the Fun Fair featuring carnival games, face painting, dunk tanks, bounce houses, and prizes.
It's heartwarming to see so many people coming together to make this camp possible. The sense of community and support here is truly inspiring, and it gives these kids a much-needed break from their everyday struggles.
