Rubber industry's ability to independently improve

In recent years, the Chinese rubber industry has made remarkable progress in independent innovation and R&D capabilities. The achievements of 2007 were particularly notable, as the sector witnessed a series of original innovations and the adoption of advanced international technologies. New eco-friendly green tires and aviation radial tires have been introduced at an accelerated pace. These developments were highlighted during the 26th Secretary-General meeting of the China Rubber Industry Association held on February 24–25. According to Chung Hongzheng, head of the China National Rubber Association, large companies have significantly increased their R&D investments in recent years. Leading tire manufacturers, especially those that have excelled in competitive markets, place great emphasis on technological development. Their R&D spending as a percentage of sales revenue often exceeds the national target of 2% to 3%. This increased investment has not only sped up product innovation but also helped optimize the industrial structure. For example, the technology for large and medium-sized all-steel radial tires has seen significant improvements, becoming a key growth driver for major companies such as Shuangqin Group, Triangle Group, Guizhou Tire Company, and Aeolus Group. As radial tire technology matures, the radialization rate has risen rapidly, leading to a decline in the output of bias-ply tires. From a product perspective, the rubber industry has achieved several cutting-edge technologies through original innovation. A new generation of environmentally friendly run-flat tires has been successfully commercialized by South China Rubber Tire Co., Ltd. last year. The country's first 28-inch tires are expected to be launched this year. These globally emerging products have transitioned from R&D to mass production in less than two years in China. Only five companies worldwide have previously mastered the production of radial tires. However, with the joint efforts of the Guilin Shuguang Rubber Industrial Research Institute and the Beijing Rubber Industry Research and Design Institute, China has made a breakthrough this year. In just over a year, the country has achieved what foreign nations have only managed to do over nearly three decades: realizing the structure of meridianization and skeleton aramidization. Additionally, giant engineering radial tires, once dominated by foreign firms, have now been produced domestically. This milestone project has earned the top prize for the National Science and Technology Progress Award this year. Moreover, rubber companies are actively focusing on talent recruitment and technology acquisition. Take Guangrao County in Shandong Province, for instance. A few years ago, most local tire companies could only produce 3 to 5 specifications. Through active talent introduction, hiring senior experts, and long-term collaboration with European and American organizations, these companies have now developed mature high-performance tire production technologies in just a few years. This transformation highlights the growing strength and global competitiveness of the Chinese rubber industry.
