Rubber industry's ability to independently improve

In recent years, China's rubber industry has made remarkable progress in independent innovation and R&D capabilities. The achievements of 2007 were particularly notable, as the sector witnessed a series of groundbreaking innovations and the mastery of advanced international technologies. New eco-friendly green tires and aviation radial tires have been introduced at an accelerated pace. These developments were highlighted during the 26th Secretary-General meeting of the China Rubber Industry Association held on February 24-25. According to Chung Hongzheng, head of the China National Rubber Association, large enterprises have significantly increased their investment in research and development. Chinese tire manufacturers, especially those that have succeeded in competitive markets, prioritize technological advancement. Their R&D spending as a percentage of sales revenue far exceeds the national target of 2% to 3%. This increased investment has not only sped up product launches but also helped reshape the industrial structure. For instance, all-steel radial tire technology has seen major improvements, becoming a key growth driver for companies like Shuangqin Group, Triangle Group, Guizhou Tire, and Aeolus Group. As radial tire technology matures, the radialization rate has surged, leading to a decline in bias tire production. From a product perspective, the rubber industry has secured several cutting-edge technologies through original innovation. Last year, South China Rubber Tire Co., Ltd. successfully industrialized run-flat tires, a new generation of environmentally friendly green tires. This year, the country’s first 28-inch tires are expected to be launched. These globally emerging products have moved from R&D to mass production in under two years in China. Only five companies across four countries worldwide have previously mastered radial tire production. However, with collaborative efforts between the Guilin Shuguang Rubber Industrial Research Institute and the Beijing Rubber Industry Research and Design Institute, China achieved a historic "zero" breakthrough this year. In just over a year, Chinese researchers accomplished what took foreign countries nearly three decades—achieving meridianization and aramidization in tire structures. Additionally, giant engineering radial tires, once dominated by foreign firms, have now been produced domestically. This project recently won the first prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award. Moreover, rubber companies are focusing on talent acquisition and technology enhancement. For example, Guangrao County in Shandong Province, known for its newly developed tire base, has transformed rapidly. A few years ago, local companies could only produce 3 to 5 tire models. Through active recruitment of domestic and international experts and long-term collaborations with European and American organizations, many companies now possess mature, high-performance tire production technologies within a short time.
