TBEA Shenyang Transformer Co., Ltd. made history as the first national standard project, successfully manufacturing the first ±500 kV DC converter transformer for the second phase of the Guizhou-to-Guangdong HVDC transmission project. This product passed all required tests on the first attempt, marking a major breakthrough for Chinese engineering. The achievement demonstrates that TBEA has mastered the core technologies of the world’s most advanced transformer systems and is fully capable of producing high-quality ±500 kV DC products independently. In December 2004, during a signing ceremony attended by the Chinese and German premiers, TBEA Shenyang, Siemens, and China Southern Power Grid signed a contract for 34 sets of ±500 kV DC equipment for the Guiguang Second Converter Station. This was the first time the Chinese side led a major power transmission project in a joint venture with foreign partners. To ensure the successful completion of this key national project, TBEA established a dedicated DC department, carefully managing the design and manufacturing process. They completed the external verification of their independent design drawings quickly, allowing the product to move smoothly into production. Starting from July 14, the first product underwent rigorous testing under the supervision of the National Transformer Quality Testing Center, the two users, and Siemens experts. Over the past 10 days, tests including DC withstand voltage, polarity reversal, AC external withstand voltage, and induced voltage were conducted, and the results met world-class standards. Currently, TBEA is accelerating production of 1000 kV UHV transformers for the State Grid's test base and has won a bid for 750 kV main transformers in the northwest region. Additionally, the company has made significant progress in developing ±800 kV DC products, and now possesses full capability to independently produce converter transformers and smoothing reactors for DC transmission projects up to ±800 kV. This marks a strong step forward in China's efforts to lead in high-voltage power transmission technology.
