TBEA Shenyang Transformer Co., Ltd. made a significant breakthrough by successfully producing the first ±500 kV DC converter transformer for the second phase of the Guizhou-to-Guangdong HVDC transmission project. This was the first national standard project, and the product passed all tests on the first attempt. The achievement marks a major milestone, showing that Shenyang has mastered the core technology required to manufacture some of the world's most advanced transformers. It also proves that the company is fully capable of producing high-quality ±500 kV DC products independently. This success came after a key event on December 6, 2004, when TBEA Shenyang, Siemens, and China Southern Power Grid signed a contract for 34 sets of ±500 kV DC equipment at the Guiguang Second Converter Station. This deal marked the first time the Chinese side led a major international power transmission project, highlighting growing confidence in domestic engineering capabilities. To ensure the successful production of this critical national project, TBEA Shenyang established a dedicated DC department. The team worked efficiently to complete design and manufacturing tasks, including rapid external verification of independent design drawings, which allowed the product to move smoothly into mass production. From July 14, the first product testing for the Guiguang Second Project took place under strict supervision from the National Transformer Quality Testing Center, the two users, and Siemens experts. Over the past 10 days, tests such as DC withstand voltage, polarity reversal, valve-side AC withstand voltage, and induced voltage were conducted. All results met high standards, confirming the product’s quality and performance. Currently, TBEA Shenyang is accelerating production of 1,000 kV AC UHV transformers for the State Grid test base and has won a bid for 750 kV main transformers in the northwest region. Additionally, the company has made significant progress in developing ±800 kV DC products, demonstrating its full capability to independently produce converter transformers and smoothing reactors for HVDC projects below ±800 kV.
