U.S. companies will build cellulosic ethanol plant

SunOpta Biological Process and Minnesota Central Ethanol Company (CMEC) signed an agreement late last year to build a 10 million gallon/year cellulosic ethanol plant in Minnesota, USA.
The unit is located near the existing 21.5 million gallon/year cereal starch-ethanol facility of Minnesota Central Ethanol Corporation (CMEC), using local sawdust as raw material, using SunOpta Bioprocess (SBI) proprietary and patented technology, and the Minnesota Central Ethanol Company ( CMEC's existing infrastructure is combined. The pre-treatment process step will use SBI's proprietary auto-hydrolysis (steam explosion) process, which uses only heat and steam for pretreatment to partially hydrolyze the lignocellulosic material. In this process, the use of an external chemical catalyst is not required, and the water contained in the raw material can be effectively utilized without requiring a large amount of external water.
