With the completion of the full relocation of air-polluting facilities, such as anion exchange resin production and chloromethyl ether projects at Shandong Dongda Chemical Co., Ltd. and Shandong Taizhou Xinhua Dongfeng Chemical Co., Ltd., along with other polluting industries like pivalic acid production, the long-standing issue of "chemical odor" in Zhangdian's Eastern Chemical Park in Shandong has finally been resolved. As of December 6th, this persistent problem that once affected the air quality of the surrounding area has been completely eliminated. Zibo Zhangdian's Eastern Chemical Park is home to several major chemical companies, including Shandong Xinhua Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Shandong Dacheng Pesticide Co., Ltd., Shandong Dongda Chemical Co., Ltd., Shandong Xinhua Dongfeng Chemical Co., Ltd., and Zibo Heli Chemical Co., Ltd. For years, these companies have released various unpleasant odors—such as fishy, sour, and pesticide-like smells—during their production processes, severely impacting local air quality and the living conditions of nearby residents. To tackle this issue, from June 1, 2004, local authorities in Zibo City imposed strict production restrictions and temporary shutdowns on some of the most polluting enterprises in the area. In late March of this year, the environmental inspection department conducted a thorough investigation into the emissions from the production processes, raw materials, and transportation of companies operating in the eastern chemical zone. The findings revealed that the "chemical odor" primarily originated from volatile gases emitted during chemical production. Following this, the Zibo Environmental Protection Bureau issued notices to five key companies, including Dacheng, Dongda, and Xinhua Dongfeng, mandating them to implement stricter emission controls and relocate or renovate their facilities. In response to these requirements, Dongda Company completed the relocation of its anion exchange resin plant in August, shutting down the highly polluting facility. In September, Dacheng Group invested 200,000 yuan in upgrading its omethoate project, installing a new set of condensers to reduce exhaust emissions. Meanwhile, Xinhua Chemical invested 800,000 yuan in building a new sewage treatment system and deodorization facilities, which were completed and put into operation by the end of November. Other companies, such as Dongfeng and Heli Energy, also followed the schedule to address their pollution issues. This comprehensive effort marks a significant step forward in improving air quality and restoring public health in the region, demonstrating the government's commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.
