Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:
Tragedy struck Lake Michigan on Sunday as an Itasca man lost his life and an Elgin woman went missing after being caught in dangerous swimming conditions. The incident occurred at Park Avenue Beach in Highland Park, where a group of 10 swimmers from an independent cold-water swim organization entered the water around 9:15 a.m. They quickly found themselves struggling against rough waves and strong winds.
Two swimmers were reported missing at the scene. A 46-year-old Itasca man was pulled from the water by fire department divers and rushed to Highland Park Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. His identity has not yet been disclosed. Meanwhile, a 52-year-old Elgin woman remains unaccounted for as of Sunday evening.
Due to the severe weather, boats were unable to enter the water. Firefighters conducted searches from the shore, and a Coast Guard helicopter arrived at around 11:45 a.m. to assist in the operation. Despite extensive efforts, the aircrew suspended its search of a roughly 10-square-mile area near where the woman was last seen just before 4 p.m.
Highland Park officials confirmed that search operations are ongoing, with local police departments along the Lake Michigan shoreline asked to remain vigilant for any sign of the missing swimmer. The National Weather Service had issued warnings earlier that day about gusts reaching nearly 40 mph and wave heights of up to 10 feet, with water temperatures hovering around 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you have any information about the missing woman, please contact the Highland Park Police Department at (847) 432-7730. This tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with swimming in unpredictable lake conditions.
