Tragic incidents unfolded on Sunday as an Itasca man lost his life and an Elgin woman went missing after being caught in dangerous conditions while swimming in Lake Michigan. The events took place at Park Avenue Beach in Highland Park, where a group of swimmers from an independent cold-weather swim club entered the water around 9:15 a.m., only to find themselves struggling against strong currents and high waves.
Two swimmers were reported missing at the scene, prompting a swift response from local authorities. A 46-year-old Itasca man was found unresponsive in the water and rescued by fire department divers. He was taken to Highland Park Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. His identity has not yet been disclosed.
A 52-year-old Elgin woman remains unaccounted for as of Sunday evening. Due to the severe weather, boats were unable to enter the water, forcing rescuers to conduct searches from the shore. A Coast Guard helicopter arrived shortly after 11:45 a.m. to assist with the operation.
By 4 p.m., the aircrew suspended its search over a roughly 10-square-mile area near where the woman was last seen. Despite this, Highland Park officials confirmed that their search efforts are ongoing, and police departments along the Lake Michigan shoreline have been asked to keep an eye out for the missing swimmer.
The National Weather Service had issued warnings earlier that afternoon, noting winds reaching nearly 40 mph and waves up to 10 feet high along the lakefront. Water temperatures were also reported to be around 55 degrees Fahrenheit, adding to the perilous conditions.
