The largest single-unit epoxy resin plant in China has officially started operations this week at Sinopec Baling Petrochemical Company. This new 40,000-ton-per-year facility was upgraded from an older 20,000-ton-per-year unit and incorporates advanced domestic technologies developed independently by Chinese engineers. All the hardware components are now domestically produced, including the pretreatment system. The entire production process—from reaction to post-processing—has been optimized through innovative design and self-researched solutions. The plant has been running smoothly for a month, with 110 tons of high-quality epoxy resin already produced. This milestone marks the maturity of China’s epoxy resin production technology.
Through technological upgrades, the facility has achieved “one-time start-up with four major advantages.†It has optimized product structure, increased single-unit capacity, improved product quality, color, hydrolyzable chlorine content, and volatile index, reaching world-class standards. Energy consumption has been significantly reduced, and the production process is now greener, with effective separation of waste sludge and wastewater, leading to lower COD levels in effluent. Despite doubling the production capacity, pollution levels have remained stable. The project cost less than 10 million yuan, yet it is expected to boost annual sales revenue by over 400 million yuan.
In recent years, Baling Petrochemical has leveraged its epoxy organic chlorine technology platform to drive specialized and supporting innovations. By utilizing its strengths in caustic soda, chlorine products, and epoxy resins, the company has continuously refined its product structure, achieving significant progress in specialized production technology for epoxy resins. Currently, the company's annual epoxy resin capacity reaches 50,000 tons, offering more than 90 varieties, including bisphenol A, brominated, phenolic, orthocresol, and flexible epoxy resins, as well as solvent-based resins and curing agents.
Epoxy resins are essential thermosetting materials used in coatings, machinery, electronics, and transportation. Globally, demand has grown at an average rate of around 20% annually. With a large number of international end-users, China’s epoxy resin market has seen rapid expansion. Today, China stands as a major global producer and consumer of epoxy resins. By 2010, it is estimated that China’s epoxy resin consumption will reach between 900,000 and 1 million tons, with a notable supply gap still existing in the domestic market.
