This week, Sinopec Baling Petrochemical Company successfully launched the largest domestic single-unit epoxy resin plant with an annual capacity of 40,000 tons. This represents a significant upgrade from its previous 20,000-ton-per-year facility, incorporating advanced processes and a range of independently developed Chinese technologies. All hardware components have been localized, including pretreatment systems, and the entire production process—covering reaction, post-processing, and other key systems—has undergone optimized design and innovation. The plant has now operated smoothly for one month, producing 110 tons of qualified epoxy resin products, marking the maturity of China’s epoxy resin production technology.
Through technological upgrades, the plant has achieved what is known as the “One Stroke and Four Advantages†strategy: optimizing product structure, increasing single-unit production capacity, enhancing product quality, color, hydrolyzable chlorine content, and volatile index to world-class standards, significantly reducing energy consumption, and achieving green production. Waste slag and wastewater are effectively separated and reused, with reduced COD levels in effluent. The production capacity has doubled without an increase in pollution factors. The transformation project cost less than 10 million yuan, yet it is expected to boost annual sales revenue by over 400 million yuan.
In recent years, Baling Petrochemical has leveraged its epoxy organic chlorine technology platform to drive specialized and supporting innovations, achieving multiple breakthroughs. By utilizing the advantages of caustic soda, chlorine products, and epoxy resins, the company has continuously adjusted its product structure, making significant progress in specialized and supporting production technologies for epoxy resins. Currently, the company has an annual production capacity of 50,000 tons of epoxy resin, offering more than 90 varieties, including bisphenol A epoxy resins, brominated epoxy resins, phenolic epoxy resins, orthocresol epoxy resins, flexible epoxy resins of different molecular weights, solvent-based epoxy resins, and epoxy curing agents.
Epoxy resins are essential thermosetting polymers used across coatings, machinery, electronics, transportation, and more. Globally, consumption has grown at an average annual rate of around 20% in recent years. The large number of overseas end-users has driven rapid growth in China’s epoxy resin demand. Today, China stands as a major producer and consumer of epoxy resins worldwide. It is estimated that by 2010, China’s epoxy resin consumption will reach between 900,000 and 1 million tons, with a notable supply gap still existing in the domestic market.
