Technological innovation is the breakthrough that helps overcome bottlenecks. Processing imported high-sulfur crude oil was once a critical challenge for Maoming’s refining industry. To tackle this issue, the company focused on innovation, collaborating with institutions like Fudan University to form a research team. Together, they successfully developed a full set of new residue hydrotreating technologies and built China’s first 2 million-ton-per-year residue hydrodesulfurization unit. This project marked a significant milestone, as it was the first domestically designed, manufactured, and installed unit using fixed-bed residue hydrogenation technology and catalysts. It filled a national gap and elevated China’s residual oil hydrogenation technology to a new level. This achievement was awarded the National Science and Technology Progress Award. After six years of safe operation, the unit processed over 11 million tons of sour crude oil, with key performance indicators reaching international standards. Thanks to this breakthrough, Maoming Petrochemical could process large volumes of high-sulfur crude oil, boosting economic returns. The technical advantages of the unit were fully demonstrated, with the three-catalyst system improving crude oil processing efficiency, light oil yield, and overall commodity rate, generating substantial economic benefits.
Scientific and technological innovation is a long-term driver of operational excellence. Maoming Petrochemical’s ethylene plant has operated safely for 79 consecutive months, setting a new record for domestic ethylene facilities and reaching an international advanced level. General Manager Chen Tonghai called it “our own gold medal in production,†while Vice Chairman Wang Jiming praised it as one of the best-managed ethylene plants in the country. The key to this success lies in the integration, absorption, and innovation of foreign technologies. By solving over 30 key bottlenecks through technological breakthroughs, the company developed proprietary techniques such as online backflushing and pressure plugging, ensuring smooth operations and effective monitoring. These efforts provided valuable experience for managing and maintaining ethylene plants across China. Additionally, the company introduced advanced technologies from both home and abroad, established 12 specialized teams for equipment protection, conducted daily inspections, and implemented real-time monitoring of 16 key units. This ensured high equipment integrity and optimal performance, allowing for efficient and uninterrupted production.

As product upgrades accelerate, Maoming Petrochemical prioritizes quality improvement as part of its sustainable development strategy. By implementing 16 new technology projects, including the conversion of coking gasoline, the company injected scientific energy into its operations and strengthened market competitiveness. A successful example is the development of highway asphalt. With the Ministry of Communications introducing new technical requirements for road asphalt materials, Maoming Petrochemical adapted quickly. It optimized raw material selection, production processes, and process conditions, achieving the technical capability to produce Class A asphalt within four months. Since July, the company began delivering asphalt according to the new standard, which meets international benchmarks. Products have been used in projects like the Yuyuan Expressway and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, demonstrating excellent performance and serving as a viable alternative to imported materials. Quantitative analysis shows that technological progress contributed 48% to the company’s profit growth, far exceeding the national average.
