As a major oil refinery and chemical enterprise, Maoming Petrochemical has long recognized that in the context of economic globalization, market competition is fundamentally driven by technological advancement. Without innovation, a company can only follow others, remain dependent, and fail to close the gap. Only through intensive investment in technology development and the creation of core and proprietary technologies can a company build a solid foundation for competitiveness. Guided by this philosophy, Maoming Petrochemical has accelerated its scientific and technological innovation, increased R&D investments, and focused on key challenges such as processing high-sulfur crude oil. Through continuous research and development, the company has introduced new processes, technologies, and products, achieving over 70 science and technology achievements at provincial and ministerial levels. The conversion of these innovations into productive forces has become a powerful driver for enterprise growth, significantly enhancing the company’s market competitiveness. Its products not only maintain stability in traditional markets but have also expanded into new regions like Southeast Asia.
Technological innovation plays a crucial role in overcoming bottlenecks. Processing high-sulfur crude oil was once a major challenge for Maoming's refining operations. To break through this constraint, the company focused on technological breakthroughs. With support from the Petrochemical Corporation, Maoming formed a research team with institutions like Fudan University and successfully developed a full set of new residue hydrotreating technologies. It built China’s first 2 million tons per year residue hydrodesulfurization unit, featuring domestically designed, manufactured, and installed equipment. This achievement filled a gap in the domestic market and marked a significant step forward in China’s residue hydrogenation technology. The project won the National Science and Technology Progress Award. After six years of safe operation, it has processed over 11 million tons of sour crude oil, with key performance indicators reaching international standards. This breakthrough allowed the company to import large quantities of high-sulfur crude oil, boosting profitability. The unit’s technical advantages have been fully demonstrated, enabling the three-catalyst unit to operate more efficiently, expand raw material sources, and improve overall processing efficiency, creating substantial economic benefits.
Scientific and technological innovation is also a long-term driver for operational excellence. Maoming Petrochemical’s ethylene plant has operated safely for 79 consecutive months, setting a new domestic record and reaching international advanced levels. General Manager Chen Tonghai called it “our own gold medal in production,†while Vice Chairman Wang Jiming praised it as one of the best-managed ethylene plants in the country. The success of the ethylene plant stems from the integration and innovation of foreign technologies. By addressing over 30 technical bottlenecks, the company developed proprietary technologies such as online backflushing and pressure plugging, optimizing production and ensuring smooth operations. The company also established 12 specialized teams for maintenance and real-time monitoring of 16 critical units, maintaining a 100% equipment integrity rate. By learning from global best practices and organizing domestic experts for consultations, Maoming ensured efficient, long-term operation of its facilities, avoiding unnecessary shutdowns and maximizing production time.
In addition, technological innovation fuels product development. As the pace of product upgrades accelerates, Maoming Petrochemical prioritizes quality improvement as part of its sustainable strategy. By implementing 16 new technology projects, including the conversion of coking gasoline, the company has enhanced both economic efficiency and market competitiveness. A successful example is the development of highway asphalt. With the introduction of new national standards that require higher-quality materials, Maoming quickly adapted by optimizing raw material selection, production processes, and process conditions. After four months of research and trials, the company met the new Class A standard. Since July, its asphalt products have been delivered according to the updated specifications and have been used in major infrastructure projects across China. Field tests show excellent performance, offering a viable alternative to imported products. Quantitative analysis shows that technological progress contributed 48% to the company’s profit growth, far exceeding the national average.
