From recent updates on Journal-Topics.com:
Mount Prospect's Deputy Fire Chief Brian Lambel is set to take over as interim fire chief starting October 1st. This change comes into effect as Fire Chief John Malcolm steps down on October 9th to join a similar role in Lake Zurich, a suburb to the northwest. At 46, Lambel has spent nearly 16 years with the department and was promoted to deputy chief just this past June.
Acting Village Manager David Strahl mentioned that Mount Prospect plans to assess Lambel's interim performance before deciding if he should remain as the permanent head of the department. With Lambel moving up, Lieutenant John Dolan will fill the deputy chief role, possibly on an interim basis. Dolan, 53, has been with the department for 19 years and will begin his new duties the week of October 5th.
Lambel and Malcolm have already started collaborating to ensure a seamless transition. Lambel highlighted that the remainder of 2015 will be particularly busy for both him and the department. They are currently recruiting six firefighters as part of a SAFER grant initiative aimed at reintroducing Engine 13 to the downtown station. Additionally, they're in the middle of a lieutenant promotion process.
In recent meetings, Lambel and Dolan have developed fresh objectives for the department, focusing heavily on enhancing training and education while encouraging employee empowerment to boost responsibility and accountability. Lambel emphasized that another key area of focus will be reevaluating their community risk reduction program, aiming to better understand community needs and find ways to minimize harm and injury to residents and businesses.
Looking ahead, the department plans to reassess operational procedures, establish a robust succession plan, and prepare for future challenges by setting both short-term and long-term goals to keep pace with evolving fire services.
A retirement celebration for Malcolm is scheduled for October 9th at Fire Station 13 on Northwest Highway. It's also expected that the village board will honor Malcolm with a special resolution during their meeting on October 6th, celebrating his many years of dedicated service.
