New fire chief in Mount Prospect

From the pages of Journal-Topics.com: In a recent development, Mount Prospect is set to welcome Brian Lambel as its interim fire chief starting October 1st. This change comes into effect as current Fire Chief John Malcolm prepares to retire on October 9th. Malcolm is moving on to take up a leadership role in Lake Zurich, a neighboring suburb. Acting Village Manager David Strahl has announced that Mount Prospect plans to assess Lambel's interim performance before deciding if he should continue as the permanent head of the department. Lambel, 46, has been with the Mount Prospect fire department for nearly 16 years. His promotion to deputy chief took place just this past June. Following his rise, Lieutenant John Dolan will step into the deputy chief role, also likely on an interim basis. Dolan, 53, brings 19 years of experience to the table and is expected to begin his new duties the following week. Lambel and Malcolm have already begun collaborating to ensure a seamless transition. Lambel mentioned that the remainder of 2015 will be quite busy for both him and the department. Currently, they are in the process of recruiting six new firefighters under the SAFER grant, which aims to reintroduce Engine 13 at the downtown station. Additionally, the department is undergoing a lieutenant promotion process. Lambel and Dolan have crafted a fresh set of objectives or a strategic plan for the fire department. One key focus will be on enhancing training and education while empowering employees to take on more responsibilities and boost accountability. Another significant initiative involves reviewing the community risk reduction program, which identifies community needs and seeks ways to minimize injuries and harm to residents and businesses. Other goals include revisiting operational procedures, ensuring a solid succession plan is in place, and setting short- and long-term goals to adapt to the evolving landscape of firefighting. A farewell event for Malcolm is scheduled for October 9 at Fire Station 13 on Northwest Highway. The village board is also planning to honor Malcolm with a resolution during their meeting on October 6, celebrating his many years of dedicated service. As the town gears up for these changes, it’s clear that the fire department remains committed to excellence and continuity. For those who have followed Malcolm's career, the upcoming celebrations will mark not just the end of an era but also the beginning of new challenges and opportunities for the department under Lambel's leadership.
