China's largest seawater desalination project, the Huaneng Yuhuan Power Plant Desalination Project, has officially entered trial operation after an investment of 200 million yuan. This groundbreaking initiative marks a significant milestone in water treatment technology, as it is the first in the world to implement the "double membrane method" for seawater desalination. The system can produce up to 1,440 tons of fresh water per hour, making it one of the most efficient desalination facilities globally.
What sets this project apart is its innovative use of residual heat from the power plant. By utilizing the waste heat, the temperature of the circulating discharge water increases by 9 to 16 degrees Celsius, significantly reducing the energy consumption required for the desalination process. As a result, the cost of treating wastewater is nearly equivalent to the price of industrial water, making the project both economically and environmentally sustainable.
The Huaneng Yuhuan Power Plant requires 8 million tons of fresh water annually, and since the region of Yuhuan County in Zhejiang Province suffers from a severe shortage of freshwater resources, all the water needed comes from seawater desalination. Once fully operational, the project will supply nearly 35,000 tons of fresh water daily—far exceeding the maximum daily processing capacity of other desalination projects currently under construction in China, which typically handle around 10,000 tons per day.
Beyond meeting the needs of the power plant, the completed desalination system will also provide additional fresh water to local residents through the municipal pipeline network. This dual-purpose approach not only supports industrial operations but also enhances the quality of life for the surrounding community. With its advanced technology, energy efficiency, and positive impact on regional water security, the Huaneng Yuhuan Power Plant Desalination Project stands as a model for future desalination initiatives worldwide.
