The Winnetka Fire Department was called to a home on the 800 block of Bryant Avenue before 4:00 AM, where a basement fire had broken out in a house undergoing renovation. The flames spread across the first floor and moved through the walls into the second level, causing significant structural damage. At 4:30 AM, the alarm was escalated from Code 3 to Code 4 and then to a Box Alarm as the situation grew more serious.
Tim Olk arrived early at the scene and captured several compelling images of the incident. Later, Larry Shapiro also arrived and contributed additional photos that provided further insight into the fire's progression.
Multiple fire companies responded to the call, including engine units from Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, and Evanston. Ambulances from Winnetka and Wilmette were also on site, while truck companies from Winnetka, Northfield, Highwood, Glenview, and Skokie assisted with the operation. Morton Grove Squad 4 was present, along with chief officers from Winnetka, Wilmetta, Northbrook, Northfield, and Glenview.
Several images from the scene show the intensity of the fire. One photo captures flames visible through a kitchen window as firefighters use a hand line from the window well. Another shows thick smoke filling the first floor after crews pulled back from interior attacks. A third image highlights firefighters using a hand line from the backyard to access the kitchen area.
Northfield Truck 29 and Glenview Truck 14 positioned their ladders in case the fire spread, while Glenview Truck 14 maneuvered into the driveway to reach the roof over the trees. A final set of images reveals the extent of the damage, including a burned-through section of the first floor and heavy destruction in the kitchen above the fire’s origin.
