Winnetka Box Alarm 11-15-12 (updated)

The Winnetka Fire Department was called to a home on the 800 block of Bryant Avenue before 4 AM, where a basement fire had broken out in a house undergoing renovation. The flames spread quickly through the first floor and even traveled up through the walls to the second level. The initial Code 3 alarm was upgraded to a Code 4, and then escalated to a Box Alarm at 4:30 AM as the situation worsened. Tim Olk arrived early at the scene and captured several striking images of the fire's intensity. Later, Larry Shapiro also arrived and added more photos to the growing collection. Multiple fire companies responded, including engines from Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, and Evanston. Ambulances from Winnetka and Wilmetta were on standby, while trucks from Winnetka, Northfield, Highwood, Glenview, and Skokie provided additional support. Morton Grove Squad 4 was also present, along with chief officers from Winnetka, Wilmette, Northbrook, Northfield, and Glenview. Several photos from the scene show the severity of the fire. One image captures flames visible through a kitchen window as firefighters use a hand line through the window well. Another shows thick smoke filling the first floor after crews pulled back from the interior. A third photo highlights the efforts of Winnetka firefighters using a hose from the backyard into the kitchen area. Northfield Truck 29 and Glenview Truck 14 positioned their aerials in case the fire spread further. Glenview Truck 14 backed into the driveway to reach over the roof with its ladder. The large home, nearly finished with renovations, showed heavy damage in the kitchen area above the fire’s origin, with parts of the floor burned through.
