In January 2008, the U.S. Department of Energy announced its support for Pacific Ethanol’s $24.32 million investment in constructing the first cellulosic ethanol validation unit in the northwestern United States. This project marks a significant step forward in the development of renewable energy sources and represents a key milestone in sustainable fuel production.
The facility will utilize agricultural byproducts such as wheat straw, sawdust, and cereal crop stalks to produce ethanol. It is set to be built at Pacific Ethanol’s existing grain-based ethanol plant in Boardman, Oregon. The medium-scale unit is expected to generate 2.7 million gallons of ethanol annually. This project aims to validate the technology developed by Danish company BioGasol ApS, which has created a process capable of converting various types of biomass into ethanol. The facility is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2009.
Pacific Ethanol is at the forefront of advancing technologies that convert diverse biomass resources into biofuels. By commercializing cellulosic ethanol production, the U.S. could significantly reduce its reliance on imported oil while also cutting millions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. This initiative not only supports energy independence but also promotes environmental sustainability through the use of renewable feedstocks.
