According to statistical data, China's total consumption of dimethylformamide (DMF) from January to September 2005 reached 265,000 tons, marking a 15% increase compared to the 230,000 tons consumed during the same period in 2004. Industry forecasts suggest that DMF consumption in China is expected to reach 380,000 tons this year. In 2006, the demand for DMF is projected to grow by 10% to 12% from 2005 levels, reaching approximately 430,000 tons. This growth is primarily driven by the synthetic leather slurry industry.
Currently, China’s DMF market remains in a state of shortage, with a significant reliance on imports, especially for high-quality DMF. The synthetic leather industry, particularly within the polyurethane sector, is the largest consumer of DMF. In 2005, the production of synthetic leather slurries in China is estimated to have used 240,000 tons of DMF, up by 40,000 tons from 2004, reflecting an 18% increase. As polyurethane artificial leather continues to outperform PVC in terms of quality and performance, its market share keeps expanding. With increasing production capacity shifting from developed countries to China, the demand for polyurethane synthetic leather is expected to rise further. In 2004, the resin consumption for synthetic leather in China was 530,000 tons, and it is projected to reach 720,000 tons in 2005, growing at an annual rate of 35%. Over the next few years, the industry is expected to maintain a growth rate of around 20%, which will drive DMF consumption in this area to grow by at least 10%.
In addition to the synthetic leather industry, DMF is widely used in pharmaceuticals for producing antibiotics such as cephalexin, ciprofloxacin, and norfloxacin. It has also been applied in anti-AIDS drug development in recent years. In 1998, the pharmaceutical industry in China consumed about 6,000 tons of DMF, rising to 18,000 tons in 2003, and is expected to reach 35,000 tons in 2005—accounting for roughly 11% of total DMF consumption. With the rapid expansion of the pharmaceutical sector, DMF demand is anticipated to continue growing at an average annual rate of 11% to 15% during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period.
DMF is also heavily used in the dyeing industry, where approximately half of the product is exported to developed countries like the U.S. and Europe. The dyestuff industry consumes a large volume of DMF, although demand fluctuates seasonally. In the textile and related industries, DMF usage accounts for about 9% of total consumption. In 1998, the dye industry consumed around 15,000 tons of DMF, rising to 23,100 tons in 2001 and 25,200 tons in 2003. By 2005, it is expected to reach 30,000 tons.
In the electronics sector, DMF is used in the production of sizing glue for copper-clad insulation and in cleaning processes, making up about 5% of domestic consumption. Consumption in this sector increased from 6,000 tons in 1998 to 17,000 tons in 2004, and is expected to grow at an 8% annual rate, reaching 20,000 tons in 2005.
DMF is also employed in butadiene extraction in ethylene production plants, with an annual consumption of around 3,000 tons. With China's butadiene production capacity expected to reach 800,000 to 1 million tons in 2005, DMF usage is projected to increase to 4,000 tons. Additionally, DMF serves as a solvent in the dry spinning process of polyacrylonitrile, with 28,000 tons consumed in 2004 and an expected increase to 36,000 tons in 2005.
Other sectors, including pesticides, plastics, coatings, and machinery, accounted for about 25,000 tons of DMF consumption in 2004, with an expected rise to 28,000 tons in 2005.
Despite the growing demand, China's DMF production faces significant challenges. High raw material costs have led to rising production costs, causing some domestic facilities to operate at a loss or even shut down. Moreover, many local manufacturers operate on a small scale with outdated technology, resulting in low-quality products that fail to meet the standards required by industries such as polyurethane synthetic leather. As a result, there remains a substantial supply-demand gap in the high-quality DMF market in China.
